High school roundup 23 Independent & Free Press, Thursday, March 3, 2011 Senior Bearcats heading to OFSAA The Acton Bearcats are heading to the provincial championships for senior girls' high school volleyball after capturing the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference championship earlier this week. Facing Hamilton's ACMT to determine the GHAC representative for next week's Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations A-classification tournament in Belleville, the visiting Bearcats prevailed in the best-of-5 qualifier three games to one. The Georgetown Rebels were also in Hamilton Wednesday to take on St. Thomas More, with the winning team advancing to the 20-team OFSAA AAAA senior girls' volleyball championships in Newmarket March 8-9. The undefeated Rebels downed Hamilton's Bishop Tonnos 3-1 in the GHAC semifinals in Georgetown Tuesday. Hockey The upset-minded Christ the King Jaguars were edged out of the Halton Tier I varsity girls' semifinals 3-2 in a shootout Tuesday by the second-place Nelson Lords in Burlington. The fifth-seeded Jags received regulationtime goals from Kendra Vander Eyken and Irene Kiroplis along with spectacular netminding from Teri-Lynn Digout, but couldn't score in the overtime period despite outshooting the Lords 11-6. Georgetown's girls skated past guest Acton 9-6 on Tuesday in the first round of HSSAA Tier II playoffs. In boys' action, CtK will host Iroquois Ridge for the Halton Tier I championship today (Thursday) at the Alcott Arena at 1:45 p.m. The Georgetown Rebels can grab a spot in the HSSAA Tier II final on Monday with a win today over St. Thomas Aquinas in the semifinals. MOVING ON: The Club at North Halton played host to the Ontario Curling Association bantam and junior mixed zone playdowns last weekend and one of the three local teams entered moved on to the regional stage. Skip Ben Bradley's rink defeated Breanna Rozon's team (pictured above, with vice Ryan Brown, left, and Alex Wharrem) in the zone final to advance to the OCA regionals March 12-13 at the Midland Curling Club.
