www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, February 8, 2012 · 8 Letters to the editor We all have a part to play in reducing human/wildlife conflict I attended the coyote information seminar on Tuesday, Jan. 31, sponsored by the Town of Oakville. I found Mr. (John) Pisapio's (Ministry of Natural Resources speaker) presentation very informative. One thing I found frustrating was that some residents seemed not to understand that we create these so-called aggressive coyotes by intentionally or unintentionally feeding them. I think it is our responsibility to be the first person to educate our children especially on how to react to a nearby or approaching coyote -- carry/use an air horn for example. Don't turn your back or run away from it. Make noise, yell, throw things but not at their head. We can help by not putting our garbage and green bins out overnight; unneighbourly as it seems -- report those who are doing the wrong thing by feeding coyotes or other wildlife (it is anonymous); educate our neighbours on the solutions to these problems; keep our trails clean; walk dogs on a short leash -- mine doesn't seem to mind her four-foot leash (I think flexible leashes should be banned and I have the scars on my legs to prove it). We have been approached and have had a coyote run up to us as well, and managed to scare it off. Be aware of your surroundings when walking in areas where you know coyotes have been seen. Coyotes can't be relocated or shot on sight. The Town can only do so much. It is working to make people more aware of the situation with signage and website information. If you see a problem that needs addressing, contact your councillor or the Town. We can all be more pro-active in a safe and conscientious manner and be part of the solution in dealing with human/wildlife conflicts. Donna Sheppard, Oakville Once again, I beat you guys to another finish line. Love, Frankie.
