Austin Operations Centre, 11620 Trafalgar Road, to collect residential electronics (computers, TVs, etc.) and household hazardous waste (pesticides, paints, household batteries, etc.). Both incorporate signiÍcant energy and water saving measures. k On February 26, 2011, the doors opened to the environmentally-friendly Acton Library. This beautiful facility is climate controlled using a geothermal system. Community Initiatives k We once again participated in Earth Hour. Since Írst participating in 2008, the community has saved enough energy to power over 15,000 homes for an hour! k Halton Hills took part in The Power Pledge Community Challenge, saving about $600,000 in energy costs and 280,000 kgs of greenhouse gas emissions annually. This success was recognized by Credit Valley Conservation's Friends of the Credit Award. Take It Back! Halton Take It Back! Halton is a directory of local businesses, nonÌproÍt organizations and municipal facilities that take back materials to be reused, recycled or disposed. In partnership with the Town, Halton Region operates Battery Depots at the Acton Arena, Halton Hills Civic Centre, Gellert Community Centre, Georgetown Library, and Mold-Masters SportsPlex, to collect household rechargeable and single-use batteries. Corporate Initiatives k Our Town Sustainability Advisory Committee is preparing an Integrated Community Sustainability Plan by listening to our community's hopes and dreams for Halton Hills. k In September 2010, Council approved a Green Development Evaluation Checklist that developers are expected to fulÍll before being allowed to build. This proactive approach to development received Credit Valley Conservation's Friends of the Credit Award. k All Town departmental business plans incorporate sustainability principles to guide decision making. k Council approved the Green Plan Progress Report Card which showed that action has already been taken on 87% of the recommendations. k Council approved a Green Meeting Event Policy. Outdoor Water Use: Know Your Colour, Know Your Limits Infrastructure Services' Environmental Initiatives k The new Edith Street parking lot in downtown Georgetown uses permeable pavers to promote inÍltration and reduce downstream impacts. k To encourage active transportation, we have completed the Cycling Master Plan, and have provided facilities on Delrex Boulevard and Danby Road. Spring Compost Give Away Halton Region's popular Spring Compost Give Away will take place this year from Monday, May 9 until Saturday, May 14. The event runs from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day at the Halton Waste Management Site, located at 5400 Regional Road 25 in Milton. Rich, garden-friendly compost will be available to Halton residents who are encouraged to bring a cash donation or a non-perishable food item, which will be given to local food banks. To ensure a reliable, continuous supply of water for essential and emergency needs, Halton has developed an Outdoor Water Uses strategy designed to quickly and effectively communicate outdoor water use restrictions. April 17 - 23 Earth Week Celebrating Earth Week 2011 in Halton Hills k The 11th annual Community Wide Clean Up Day is on Saturday April 16th. This is your chance to clean up Halton Hills. Businesses and schools are asked to do a quick 22 minute litter pick up in their neighbourhood. Free bags and gloves are available. k Earth Day Celebrations will take place on Saturday, April 30th from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Robert C. Austin Operations Centre, 11620 Trafalgar Road, Georgetown. $5 trees, free mulch and wood chips, free electronic recycling, BBQ and more. Donations to local food banks gratefully accepted. An air monitoring station in Milton provides residents in north Halton with a better indicator of air quality and monitors trends. A rebate of $75 is available to residents of single-family homes who purchase and install a Halton-approved high-efÍciency toilet.
