Honda Civic 2012 offers more for less By JIM ROBINSON Metroland Media Group Carguide Magazine NEW YORK CITY-- The world premiere of the 2012 Honda Civic at the New York Auto Show is of major importance in Canada. The Civic has been the top selling car here for the past 13 years and every version of the 2012 Civic for North American consumption will be built at Honda's manufacturing facility in Alliston, Ont., with the exception of the Hybrid that is built in Japan. Canadians love compact cars something not lost on Honda Canada officials. At the press preview of the new Civic in Washington, D.C., a week before New York, the message Honda Canada officials were trying to get across was `more for less'. Honda has lowered the prices on the 2012 models versus the 2010 models by up to $2,000. For example the 2010 entry level DX with manual transmission was priced at $16,990 while the 2012 manual DX comes in at $14,990. At the same time, Honda has added content that was not available on the 2010 model. For instance, the 2012 DX has electronic stability control. This plus other improvements add up to $600. shi, Senior Chief Engineer on the Civic who attended the press launch. He did so despite the current difficulties in getting out of a devastated Japan, such is the importance of the project in the eyes of Honda. He said the primary goal was to create a Civic that was `distinctive and smart' with emphasis on a futuristic cockpit and systems that are easy to understand and use. The 2012 Civic is offered as a fourdoor sedan and three-door coupe. There are changes to 90 per cent of the body parts, but frankly, I was hard pressed to see the differences. One area, though, was the A-pillar that is much thinner now. Another is the `smart interface concept' which involves a toggle switch on the upper left steering wheel cross spoke. It offers a wide range of selections such as audio, fuel economy and clock all of which as depicted on a fiveinch monitor on the upper tier of the dual dashboard. Wholesale changes were made on the suspension (MacStruts front, multi-link rear) to improve response and linearity with regards to steering wheel inputs. The result is a Civic that not just provides steady, dependable transport, but is fun to drive.
