8 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday,May 10, 2011 SPORTS & LEISURE Five locals selected in OHL's priority draft By EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer No fewer than five local residents were chosen in Saturday's Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection, including a pair of centremen who were surprised they were taken amongst the top-30 picks. Jacob Harris was the sixth player drafted in the second round by the Sudbury Wolves, who are coached by fellow Georgetown native Trent Cull. The 16-year-old Harris, who had 43 goals and 37 assists as captain of the Halton Hurricanes' minor midgets this past season, was in the middle of an off-ice workout Saturday morning at the Ontario Minor Hockey Association under-17 training camp in Guelph when a friend told him the news. "It's nice to get selected that high because I wasn't expecting it, but I didn't really care when I was drafted or by who. I just want to play in the OHL next year," said the 5-foot-11, 175-pound Christ the King student. "I spoke with Trent on the phone a couple of weeks before the draft and their general manager, Blaine Smith, visited our house to talk to us. They were one of the teams that showed the most interest and I'm excited about going to training camp." Jason Dickinson, a six-foot centre who had 79 points last season with the minor midget Hurricanes, was the 10th player taken in the second round by the Guelph Storm and was also at the OMHA under-17 camp on the weekend. "I knew they were interested but I didn't think I'd go that early," Dickinson told the Guelph Mercury. A 5-foot-11, 155-pound centre, the Christ the King student described his game as "fast, physical and intense." The Kitchener Rangers took Josh Sterk with the first pick of the fifth round. Another centreman, the 5-foot-10, 155-pound Sterk played for the Mississauga Senators' minor midgets this past year. Several members of the minor midget AAA Hurricanes were drafted, including Georgetown's Connor Brown, a 5-foot-11, 175-pound left winger taken in the ninth round, 179th overall, by the Ottawa 67's. Local resident Liam Clare, a 5-foot-9, 150-pound defender, went to the Windsor Spitfires in the 14th round. Fastpitch fumble Georgetown Rebel baserunner Jenn Eady (11) was able to avoid being tagged out by Christ the King second baseman Stephanie Masniuk during their Halton high school girls' fastpitch contest on Thursday at the Georgetown Fairgrounds. In the first game of the regular season for both teams, the Rebels prevailed 3-1 as Maddy Mayberry belted a run-scoring triple and then scored the winning run after being singled home by Eady. Photos by Eamonn Maher Bulldogs romp on home floor The Halton Hills Bulldogs won their first two home games convincingly last week and appear to be rounding into form early in this Ontario Lacrosse Association Jr. B season. Veteran Blake Kenny and rookie Brandon Clelland had two goals apiece in the Bulldogs' 9-7 win over the visiting Oakville Buzz Thursday night. Taking a 6-1 lead into the intermission, Halton Hills controlled much of the contest, outshooting the Buzz 48-32. Connor Sellars, Peter Laidlaw, Tyler Ferreira, Jamie Batten and Justin Reid also found net for the home side, now tied for first in the division with Oakville at 4-2. The outcome was never really in doubt on Saturday against the Gloucester Griffins, as the host 'Dogs led 12-6 after 40 minutes and recorded a 16-10 triumph. Michael Licata (4), Brad Kri (2), Chris Haynes (2), Sellars, Dylan Gilbert, Ferreira, Kenny, Daryl Hanzelka, Jayson Crawford, Batten and Reid were the goal scorers. This week, the Bulldogs will visit Newmarket Friday to face the 3-2 Saints and will entertain the 2-1 Markham Ironheads Saturday at the Alcott Arena starting at 7:30 p.m. LEASE FOR 2012 Civic.
