Highland Games seeks sponsors By LISA TALLYN Staff Writer With the Georgetown Highland Games just a few weeks away organizers are seeking sponsors for the event. The Georgetown Games will be held June 11-- and are Ontario's first games of the year. This year there will be a special event at the Games-- the 145th anniversary of the formation of the Lorne Scots Regiment, which will be celebrated with a parade and drumhead service. Georgetown Highland Games past president Bill Miller said approximately 70 veterans from Afghanistan, and a total of 120 troops, will be taking part in the parade. "It would be a good opportunity for people to thank our veterans for their service in Afghanistan," said Miller. Miller said over the past four years sponsorship for the Games declined by about 30 per cent due to the economy and the weather last year resulted in 44 per cent less income due to poor attendance. "That's the first time in 35 years we've really lost money," said Miller. Miller stressed the need for more sponsors saying without them, "we're dead." "We're hoping the local population and especially local businesses will support us by attending and/or sponsoring," said Miller. He said there are various levels of sponsorship beginning at $200. Miller explained depending on the amount they choose to sponsor their name will be included in the list of sponsors and signage on the field on the day of the Games. Admission tickets will also be provided to sponsors. "It's a good advertising venue," said Miller. Approximately 6,000 people attend the games held at Georgetown Fairgrounds annually. They are the closest games to Toronto. Anyone interested in becoming a sponsor of the games is asked before June to email the current president Maggie McDonell at maggie_mcdonell@hotmail. com as soon as possible, and someone will respond back. Information is also available at www.georgetownhighlandgames.com or by writing to Georgetown Highland Games, PO Box 16, Georgetown, ON, L7G 4T1. 9 Independent & Free Press, Thursday, May 12, 2011 OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK!
