The Lakeshore Football Officials Association, in existence since 1963, is actively recruiting individuals interested in officiating amateur football. LFOA members officiate all levels of amateur football in the regions of Halton, Peel and Niagara, including all house league and city rep minor football programs, the Ontario Varsity Football League, the Ontario Football Conference and all area high school leagues. A large number of LFOA members have advanced to demonstrate their skills in the Northern Football Conference, Canadian university football and the Canadian Football League. Left photo: Graham Paine/Metroland West Media Group Top photo by Eamonn Maher Chapman seeking fifth NLL championship ring By EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer The Toronto Rock will be gunning for its first Champion's Cup title since 2005 this Sunday and the National Lacrosse League franchise needs little motivation to get the job done. Acton native Sandy Chapman and the Rock are set to play host to the Washington Stealth, the team that came back from a 10-6 third-quarter deficit to defeat Toronto 15-11 in last year's NLL championship game. The 30-year-old Chapman, who was named the league's best defender for 2010, is seeking his fifth Champion's Cup ring and fourth with Toronto. Memories of last season's fourthquarter collapse were stirred up again last Saturday in the semifinals in Buffalo when the Bandits trailed 11-6 at one stage, but mounted a late rally that just fell short in a 12-11 Rock victory. "We're going to have to hold (Washington) in check when we run into some downtime because they're able to score in bunches," said the 5-foot-9, 185pound Chapman. "We've been struggling with that all season and the key is to not let them get momentum. Going all the way out there (to Everett, Wash.) last year and losing was tough to swallow, so this is a great chance at redemption. Losing my first (NLL title) really opened my eyes to how difficult it is to win the championship and I don't want to have that feeling again." With a 12-6 overall record, the Rock get to host the Champion's Cup this time against the 12-8 Stealth and hope for a near-capacity crowd at the Air Canada Centre. Game time is 2 p.m. A 7-1 mark at home bodes well for Toronto, but Chapman is wary of a Washington squad that appears to be peaking at the right time again after a 10-8 road win over the league-best Calgary Roughnecks in the semis, denying local native Daryl Veltman a shot at the crown. Veltman had 15 goals and 31 assists in 16 games with Calgary this season. Another source of urgency for the Rock is to send its longtime goaltender, Bob Watson, into the sunset with another championship on his resume. Watson, 41, is retiring regardless of the result of Sunday's tilt and is considered the best-ever performer at that position. "The guys are pushing hard for him to go out on a winning note and he's so lucky to be able to play his last game at home," Chapman added. "It would be pretty special to see him win it in front of the great Rock fans. That's why we're going to have to play our best in front of him." There'll be little time for Chapman and a few of his Toronto teammates to recover from the Champion's Cup game before they board a flight for the Czech Republic Tuesday to play for Canada at the World Indoor Lacrosse Championships in Prague May 21-29. "This is the first time I've represented Canada in lacrosse and it's pretty cool," said the Freelton resident. "When we were on a conference call to talk about it last week, everyone mentioned that we're going over there to win gold and nothing less, so there's a little pressure there. Teams like the U.S. and Iroquois have so much talent but I think we match up well." Chapman, a nurse at Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington, will be wearing a Halton Hills Minor Lacrosse Association patch as the organization will sponsor him at the world championships.
