Walmart Ward & Patch Sports The Goalie Crease Wastewise Winners St. John's to host old-fashioned revival By JANET DUVAL St. John's United Church Take a trip back in time on the last weekend of May, as St. John's United Church of Georgetown and Glen Williams celebrates 175 years of ministry in this area. Sunday morning on May 29 at 10 a.m. enjoy old time hymns and some historical re-enactments at a Methodist style revival meeting in a huge tent set up on the Glen Williams church grounds beside the Credit River. Expect some modern music too, and a children's time. Share memories, and dress in period costume if you wish. The night before on May 28, relax and enjoy an acoustic jam singalong in the tent beginning at 7:30 p.m. Music will be eclectic with some numbers led by participants, in a style that's somewhere between campfire and coffee house. In very non-Methodist style, some may choose to wander over to the local pub afterwards. St. John's anniversary celebrations will span three years, reflecting the founding of the Glen church 175 years ago, and of a Georgetown congregation three years later. The two combined in 1971. It was 1836 when Episcopal Methodists began holding services in various homes in the community of Williamsburg, now Glen Williams. These Methodists addressed each other as Brother and Sister. They loved to sing the hymns of Charles Wesley and Isaac Watt, all of which they knew by heart. They prayed passionately, and they espoused somewhat radical Interested in becoming a co-op employer, please contact Len Untinen @ untinenl@hdsb.ca or (905) 877-6966 ext. 249 Voicemail 456 causes in their day. It was the hamlet's founder Benajah Williams who deeded his property over to the congregation "with a shaky signature" in 1840. Soon after a wood frame building went up, and a young saddlebag preacher named Egerton Ryerson rode out from Toronto to speak. Ryerson, after whom the university is named, is renowned as the founder of public education in Ontario, and of Victoria College and the Ryerson Press. His stirring words apparently started a great spiritual revival here, to be reflected in the May 29 tent meeting. In 1902, the Glen Methodist church celebrated "splendid improvements" including electric lights, brick cladding, and the purchase of three pulpit chairs which are still in use. In 1925 the church joined the new United Church of Canada, and in 1971 it amalgamated with Georgetown United Church to form St. John's United Church of Georgetown and Glen Williams-- one congregation with two places of worship. This year, the sanctuary is being repainted and there is new landscaping, thanks in part to a generous donation of plant material from Sheridan Nurseries. Anyone attending Saturday night or Sunday's events is asked to bring a lawn chair. On Sunday, there will be extra parking at Glen Williams School. After the service, enjoy a shared potluck lunch. In keeping with the church's motto "Open Doors, Open Hearts, Open Minds," everyone is very welcome.
