8 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday,May 31, 2011 SPORTS & LEISURE Tide teams cruise in openers The North Halton Crimson Tide rep football season got off to a great start on the May long weekend with all three teams winning their opening matchups in convincing fashion. The bantam (under-15) Crimson Tide rode Aaron Steffens' five-touchdown performance to a 5813 victory over the visiting Mississauga Warriors and followed that up with a 41-0 triumph against visiting TNT this past Friday. The junior varsity (under-16) squad began its season with a dominating performance of its own, beating the Niagara Storm 45-7. Brandon Gordon (3), Haydn Gaskill-Cadwallader, Tudor Bertiean, and Brad Ranson scored touchdowns for the JV Tide in the win. The weekend was capped off with the varsity Tide's 32-10 victory over the Ajax-Pickering Dolphins. Cam Wilkinson and Jordan Blum scored touchdowns on the ground for the Tide, while Zach St. Jacques added two scoring catches. Jordan Fryer recovered a fumble in the end zone to round out the major scoring for North Halton. The JV Tide will host Orangeville on Friday at 8 p.m. and the North Halton bantams are also set to take on Orangeville at Kiwanis Field Sunday at 7 p.m. Bulldogs perfect 9-0 in month of May A 1-2 start to the regular season seems to have lit a spark under the defending Canadian Jr. B lacrosse champions. The Halton Hills Bulldogs crushed the visiting Nepean Knights 17-0 Saturday for their ninthstraight win, completing a perfect 9-0 month of May in the Ontario Lacrosse Association Jr. B league. Unleashing 82 shots on the Nepean net, the 'Dogs posted a rare shutout and were led by Seth Laidlaw's four-goal, two-assist effort. Chris Haynes (3), Peter Laidlaw (2), Luke Laidlaw (2), Blake Kenny (2), Brandon Clelland, Sean Terry, Dylan Gilbert and Jordan Dance also contributed to the scoring onslaught. The 10-2 Bulldogs are closing in on the 13-1 Clarington Green Gaels for top spot in the OLA East Conference and the teams meet in Georgetown June 9. Halton Hills also downed its division rival, the Oakville Buzz, 10-4 Friday at Glen Abbey. Tied 3-3 midway through the contest, the Bulldogs broke things open with former Buzz sharpshooter Gilbert netting four consecutive goals. Pete Laidlaw (2), Clelland, Dance, Kenny and Haynes rounded out the offence. The 'Dogs travel to Port Credit Friday to take on the 4-8 Mississauga Tomahawks and then will host the 1-13 Orillia Kings Saturday at the Alcott Arena beginning at 7:30 p.m. NOTES: Former Bulldog and Georgetown resident Cameron Flint was part of a memorable run for the University of Denver's men's lacrosse team that ended at the NCAA's Final Four in Baltimore on the weekend. The 20-year-old sophomore midfielder finished fourth on the Pioneers in scoring with 27 goals and the team became the first-ever school west of the Mississippi to reach the national semifinals before falling to the Virginia Cavaliers 14-8 on Saturday. A finance major, the 5-foot-11, 200-pound Flint was also named as an Honorable Mention AllAmerican selection by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association for 2011 for the sixthranked Pioneers. Quarterback Brad Ranson of North Halton's Crimson Tide tries to break the tackle by a Niagara Storm defender during the opening weekend Jamboree for the Ontario Minor Football League at Kiwanis Field in Georgetown. Ranson scored one of his team's touchdowns in a 45-7 romp over Niagara. Photo by Jon Borgstrom Team had Impact in first year The Georgetown Impact has been known exclusively as a girls' volleyball club organization until this year, when a group of 15- and 16-year-old boys put together an inaugural season that will be tough to duplicate. Playing against competition sometimes two years older than they were, the Impact boys struggled early on and coach Patty Hall was unsure if they'd even have enough players to put on the floor. But Georgetown won the Ontario Volleyball Association under-17 boys' Tier II championship with a 19-25, 25-20, 16-14 victory over the Aurora Storm Surge in the final and placed second in the under-16 Tier I provincials, bowing out to Mississauga's Pakmen in the championship match 25-16, 25-9. The Impact then placed fifth at the national championships in Sherbrooke, Que. Team members (front, from left) are: Robbie Abrams, Sebastian Beckett, Connor Speers. Back row: Matt Stoddart, Matt Salisbury, Braden Leonard, Marty Burwell, Ken Kerr, Josh Green, coach Patty Hall, Jake MacNeil, Brad Hancock. Absent: Liam Clare, assistant coaches Jeff Birrell and J.J.
