12 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, June 23, 2011 Teachers, students needed to help Brampton man realize dream By SIERRA LeFAVE Special to the IFP Volunteer teachers and high school students are needed this weekend (June 25-26) at the Georgetown Armouries on Todd Road to help a Brampton man realize his dream of getting much-needed books to Aboriginal children. Getting books to kids in Northern Ontario settlements has been Lloyd Fournier's `raison d'être' for some time now. The project began after a tour of Canada that the Brampton man did to speak to different tribes about unity. During the trip he realized a painful truth that many of the Aboriginal people, his own people, were in need of serious help. Upon his return he began telling people about the lack of school resources and soon they started to give him books to deliver on his next trip to the north. As books poured in they soon filled his own and neighbor's garages. It wasn't long before he realized there were too many books to transport alone, especially because many sites are fly-in only. He then gained the support of the Canadian Forces and the Third Canadian Rangers Patrol Group to help with transportation of the books. In Fournier's own experience he has seen many things including, "seeing an elder clan mother trying to teach arithmetic to a group of eight children. They had only one textbook for the group and it was dog-eared and ratty," he said. Currently he is looking for donations of textbooks in brand new or gently used condition, especially Grades 6 to 8 science and math textbooks. There is also a demand for school supplies such as backpacks and art supplies including crayons and construction pads, etc. All donations are needed by Friday, June 25, so they can be sorted and then shipped to Canadian Forces Base Borden that weekend. There is also need for upwards of 50 volunteer teachers to help sort and supervise, as well as upwards of 100 high school students, cadets, etc. to help with the final effort of sorting and preparing the donations for shipping. That process will take place at Georgetown Armouries June 25-26 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information about donating or volunteering, contact Fournier at 905-453-3115 or email him at lloyd_ fournier@hotmail.com.
