"My plan is to do very little, I hope, for at least a year and figure out if I want to do more than very little at some stage," he said with a laugh. "My wife has plans for me learning to be a dramatically better cook and make her life much simpler." McLean has spent what seems an entirety of his life in school. After graduating university, he began his teaching career at Appleby College and has not left since. He eventually became principal, and currently lives on campus. "The whole time has actually been pretty terrific. There's the extent to which this is a job and then there's the extent to which this is a vocation. At some stage, this ends up being your life's work," he said. During his tenure at the school, there have been changes to the Grades 7-12 school. McLean said Appleby College is progressive and works towards improving its quality and its commitment to excellence. Some of the changes during his time included a doubling of enrolment to more than 700 students, as well as a commitment being made to technology, which resulted in each student getting a laptop -- this has Come the new school year, a familiar face will no longer be seen at Appleby College. That's because Guy McLean, the boarding school's principal, is retiring after 25 years at the helm of the private school and 41 years as an educator. "It's an incredibly exciting and vibrant place with lots of natural enthusiasm and vitality from both the students and the faculty and the staff," said McLean. "I suspect I will miss the students' natural exuberance and excitement and the level of vibrancy that exists here." However much he'll miss the students and the staff, McLean admits he is also looking forward to forging ahead with a life after school, after spending so much of his life in school. "I'm excited about retiring," he said. "You feel that you've done what you're going to do here." McLean said it is now time for someone else to take over his post, a job that demands much time. Perhaps the most significant of changes during his time as principal occurred when the school became co-ed, some 20 years ago, which he said was a successful move for Appleby College. There were challenges to making the change, he admits. "There was no financial drive to do it, which is good and bad," he said. It was good from the purity of motive point of view; bad from the point of view that if we had that as a reason, then it probably would have been much more acceptable to our alumni at the time." There were several reasons for converting the previously all-boys school to co-ed. "We wanted to be more of a high school and be larger so we could offer more rich and diverse programs at the high school level. Also, we wanted to have a female voice around the table, in the classroom, amongst the students and (those) living on campus," he said. "We're simply a more dynamic and diverse and interesting and challenging and exciting environment as a result of having girls as a part of the student body." McLean is serving as principal until the end of the academic year this June. The school recently held a retirement celebration for McLean featuring Canadian tenor and international success Michael Schade, as well as Canadian soprano and Appleby alumna Stephanie Domingues.
