Caballero, who owns Power Yoga Canada in Oakville, became aware of the Yogathon last year when organizers asked if her studio would participate. "I also jumped at the chance to participate because it's a cause that is very near and dear to my heart," she said. "For me, I've seen a lot of things happen, basically because of the lack of awareness and knowledge on the subject. And there's very little support for mental illness from a government perspective -- it's less likely to intervene and that leaves the families with very little support." Caballero says she has done extensive research on schizophrenia. As a result, she wants to spread awareness of to break the stigma and help those affected, and their families, get the support they need. In her experience, Caballero says it is only through medication and support that those affected by schizophrenia are able to function, and sometimes highly-function, in society. "There's a lot of people who do have schizophrenia that are highly functional but it's because they have the support of the people around them and they're willing to acknowledge the disease and recognize it's an illness," she said. "That's one of the reasons why I practice yoga and maintain a healthy mental balance because I feel if you don't... any of us can suffer from any type of mental illness." As a province-wide fundraising event, this year's Oakville yogathon will be held at Appleby College (540 Lakeshore Rd. W.) from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. -- another event will take place in Toronto the same day. Individual participants are asked to raise a minimum of $100, while teams of five-10 members are asked to raise a minimum of $800 to go towards the goal of raising $80,000 for the cause. To register online, visit www. yogathon.ca -- opportunities to sponsor a participant or donate directly to the SSO are also available there. "It's important for us to support our children and talk about these mental illnesses... so often we just put it aside and label it as embarrassing and nobody talks about it, until it's too late."
