165th edition opens Friday 5 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday, September 6, 2011 Horses-- large and small-- are theme of Georgetown Fall Fair Horses will be the theme of this weekend's 165th annual Georgetown Fall Fair. The fair will feature one of North America's top Percheron six-horse hitches, which will be on display all weekend long. The hitch of black Percherons is owned by the Black family of Hillsburgh-- recognized as having one of the outstanding show hitches and being one of the premier Percheron breeders in North America. Four generations of the Black family are involved in the breeding operation. At the fair, which runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 9-11) at Georgetown Fairgrounds, the Blacks will be doing demonstration hitches as well as participating in the Draft Horse Show Sunday. Fair-goers will have the chance to see the Percheron horses' show harness, wagon and other equipment used to show and transport them. There will also be miniature horses at the fair. Karen and Ted Lada of Spring Gait Meadows will be bringing their three miniature horses, including two-monthold miniature palomino Little Prince Charming, who measured 19 inches tall at birth. The fair will also feature a new and improved midway run by Magical Midways. "After a year of visiting many fairs and observing midway operators in action, the Georgetown Fall Fair believes that we have made the right decision in contracting Magical Midways," said Lorna Wilson, chair of the Midway committee. "Their staff is pleasant and their rides are in excellent working order. It is reassuring when the owner has the licenses to operate and repair the rides." TED ARNOTT, MPP WELLINGTON-HALTON HILLS Council to recommend no rural trash pickup to Region following survey results By CYNTHIA GAMBLE Staff Writer After a spring survey showed rural residents were split on whether to add waste collection pickup service, Halton Hills council will recommend `no' to its regional counterpart. Of the 1,118 surveys returned (a 41% return rate), 38.1% would "strongly agree" to include waste collection to the current green cart and Blue Box pickup service, but 37% "strongly disagreed". "They did not give us a clear direction," said Ward 2 Councillor Joan Robson, adding that more residents than ever before commented through the survey and at the public meetings. Ward 2 Councillor Bryan Lewis added to the council recommendation that a two-thirds majority should be required before any future decision on the service is considered. Wards 1&2 Regional Councillor Clark Somerville noted that many of the people who spoke to him were opposed because payment was based on a home's assessment.
