In Focus, November, 2011 4 Letter from In Focus November 1 is my half-birthday. MY HALF-BIRTHDAY! I don't think you understand what a big deal this is. Growing up, half-birthdays (or "and a half" birthdays, as we called them) were momentous occasions. Why, you ask? Because my parents are dentists. Still have no idea what I'm talking about? Allow me to explain... Because my parents are dentists, my siblings and I were never allowed to eat sugary snacks. No cookies, no candy, no chocolate, no ice cream. Nada. My parents, however, felt a little bit guilty, thinking that being deprived of sugar would somehow stunt our physical and/or emotional growth, so they invented "and a half" birthdays where...wait for it...we got an ice cream cake. AN ICE CREAM CAKE. For kids who very rarely had sugar, ice cream cake was a huge deal. We're talking two different kinds of ice cream, a tasty cookie-and-fudge filling, topped with whipped cream...basically everything we were never allowed to have. It's no wonder I still get excited when November 1 rolls around. And August 22. And September 5. And June 11. Lots of half-birthday celebrations were one of the benefits of having so many siblings! Speaking of celebrations, last month was a busy one for In Focus. Our photographers were out every weekend, snapping photos at tons of different events, festivals and fundraisers. We were there when Halton Hills Christian School students fêted their grandmas and grandpas at the school's annual Grandparents' and Special Friends' Day (see photos on page 14). We caught the action at the Walk for Georgetown Hospital, which set a new fundraising record this year (flip to page 9 for those pics). We grabbed a fork and dug in at International Flavours in Downtown Georgetown (check out those pictures on page 3). So sit back, relax and see what your friends, family and neighbours have been up to in this month's In Focus. Happy November!
