12 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday,November 1, 2011 SPORTS & LEISURE High school report Runners on course for OFSAA Several athletes from Georgetown will be heading to Ottawa for Saturday's Ontario high school cross-country running championships thanks to their performances at last week's Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference meet at Hamilton's Christie Conservation Area. The Georgetown Rebels won the junior boys' team title as four runners placed among the top 11 finishers, headed up by Matt Simpson's runnerup result. GDHS teammates Ben Wanless (4th), Max Wanless (7th) and Jordan Toth (11th) qualified for OFSAA, as did Christ the King's Andrew Pundsack (3rd). GDHS's midget boys' team also earned a trip to the nation's capital this weekend with a second-place overall finish in the 5-km race. Matt Knebel (2nd), Owen Bahen (16th), Liam Carson (23rd) and Jake Payne (24th) contributed points to the effort. Haleigh Baines of CtK qualified for the provincials with a runner-up result in the midget girls' 3-km event and the Jaguars were fourth in the team standings. In the junior girls' 4-km race, Georgetown's Lauren Brewster made the OFSAA grade by placing fourth, while CtK's Irene Kiroplis qualified in sixth spot. No local senior runners qualified, although Caitlin Watson (9th), Mitchell Krafczek (9th) and Nick McKnight (10th) placed in the top 10. FIELD HOCKEY: Two Christ the King players and two more from GDHS have been selected to play in the Halton girls' high school senior allstar showcase today (Tuesday) at Notre Dame in Burlington.
