8 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, November 3, 2011 Local charity rider Mark Burger not done rolling yet By LISA TALLYN Staff Writer Mark Burger is back from his bicycle ride across Canada to raise money and awareness for childhood cancer and later this year will be taking part in the Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay. Just two days before the Sears National Kids Cancer Ride was to begin Burger injured his knee while playing with some friend's children and it briefly looked like he might not be able to take part in the ride, but fortunately that was not the case. The first couple of days he rode his bicycle solo to see how his knee would hold up but then he was able to get on the tandem bike as planned with brain cancer survivor Josh Nelson, 17, of Cambridge to complete the journey. Burger has raised approximately $28,000 for the Ride and has two indoor cycling fundraising events in Mississauga and Milton coming up where he expects to raise even more. He's hoping to bring in about $50,000 in total for the cause. Donations can be made to the Ride through the end of the year. To sponsor Burger go to www.searsnationalkidscancerride.com, call him at 905-2996002 or email him at boardtopia@hotmail.com. Burger applied and was chosen to be a Medal-Bearer in the Rick Hansen Relay and will be taking part on Thursday, Dec. 1 in Cambridge. Approximately 7,000 Medal-Bearers will make their way across the country passing a singular Rick Hansen Medal to the next Medal-Bearer. The Relay recreates Hansen's original Man in Motion cross-Canada tour. Burger will be walking alongside Josh, also a Medal-Bearer, in his wheelchair for the first km of the Relay and then the two will get back on the tandem bicycle for the second km. Along with being chosen as a medal bearer Burger was also selected as a Difference Maker, someone who has put service above self to make a difference in the lives of others. A short video on Burger will air on CTV Dec. 1, the same day he takes part in the Relay. Burger and Josh have also been invited to the Rick Hansen Gala Thursday at Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Burger said he was excited when he found he would be taking part in the 25th Anniversary Relay. "I thought it was a great way for Josh and I to finish off our journey," said Burger. Mark Burger embraces Josh Nelson, the 17-year-old brain cancer survivor who rode with him on a tandem bicycle during the Sears National Kids Cancer Ride.
