12 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday,December 13, 2011 Raiders show Spirit in shootout triumph By EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer Even on an off night, the Georgetown Raiders still found a way to pick up two points Saturday, coming back from a 3-1 third-period deficit to defeat the visiting Stouffville Spirit 4-3 in a shootout. The 22-8-1 Raiders have lost just once in their last 11 games and hold on to top spot in the Ontario Junior Hockey League's West Division, one point ahead of the Oakville Blades. Outshot 51-42 by Stouffville, new Georgetown goalie Steve Racine earned first-star honours for keeping his squad in the game before goals by Nick Perruccio and Geoffrey Bagnall pushed the contest into extra time. Patrick Megannety then clinched the victory by scoring the lone goal through four rounds of the shootout. "We've been sticking to the systems that (head coach and GM Greg Walters) gives us and it's been working for us," said Raider captain Alex Lubczuk. "We're looking to make a deep run in the playoffs. Now we've got two great goalies with (Racine) and (Michael Giugovaz) and we've got to keep improving in the 20 games or so left before the playoffs." Racine, a 20-year-old from the Buffalo, N.Y. area, has won all three of his starts so far with the Raiders since being acquired from a team in SPORTS & LEISURE B.C. earlier this month. This weekend, Georgetown takes on the IceHawks in Milton Friday night and the teams will meet again Saturday at the Alcott Arena at 7:30 p.m. The Raiders will be well represented on the OJHL's Team West roster that will play in the inaugural Central Canada Cup All-Star Challenge Dec. 27-29 in Smiths Falls, Ont. Eight teams will compete, including the four OJHL conferences, Quebec, Northern Ontario and two Central Canadian league squads. Forwards Megannety and Tyson Fawcett, defenceman Nathan Domagala, coach & GM Walters and athletic trainer Andrew Groombridge were selected for Team West, Stouffville Spirit netminder Jonathan Hall turns aside a scoring attempt by Ryan Lopes of the Georgewhich will play three preliminary- town Raiders during their Ontario Junior Hockey League matchup Saturday at the Alcott Arena.
