The Titans earned a berth in the provincial quad-A tournament with a 25-13, 25-12, 25-18 win over Hamilton's Cardinal Newman in the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference (GHAC) final Tuesday at Trinity. The victory capped an emotional five-day stretch for the Titans, who lost to Loyola in the Halton final last Thursday but then rebounded to win their GHAC semifinal Monday over St. Jean de Brebeuf in Hamilton. Titans power Rebecca Forbes said the team was driven by the chance to face the Hawks again. "That's what we were really hoping. This was great, too, playing teams from Hamilton, but our rivalry is so big with Loyola," she said. "It was a shock (that the Hawks lost their GHAC semifinal Monday to Newman). No one honestly thought that would happen. Even Loyola didn't think that would happen." The Titans will be making their first OFSAA girls' volleyball appearance since 2004, when the team competed in the triple-A tournament. Sandra Moretta, who coaches the Titans along with Vesna Brnadic, doesn't feel lack of experience will be an issue for Trinity at OFSAA next week in Kitchener. "The girls approach every tournament like they've never seen the teams before, and they take charge right from the beginning," said Moretta, who suggested the Titans should be a top-five seed at the tournament. Return trip for basketball team Meanwhile, Trinity's boys' basketball team will be making a return trip to OFSAA. Trinity secured a spot in the provincial quad-A tournament for the second year in a row with a 50-38 victory over Cardinal Newman in the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference (GHAC) final Monday in Hamilton. The Titans held Newman to four points in both the first and third quarters, built a 32-18 lead through three frames and cruised from there. "It's the best I've seen us play (defensively) as a unit," Trinity head coach Andrew Saulez said. Trevon McNeil paced the Titans with 19 points. Trinity will represent GHAC at the OFSAA championships, which will begin next Monday in Ottawa. Saulez believes that this year's OFSAA trip will be more productive than last year's, when Trinity went 0-2 in the school's first OFSAA boys' basketball appearance. "I don't think it will be overwhelming this time," said the coach. "It's another tournament, but there's just something more to OFSAA. Hopefully, knowing what to expect this year, we're a little more prepared." Saulez anticipates the Titans will be seeded anywhere from fifth to eighth in the tournament. Trinity is 32-8 overall this season, with none of its losses coming by more than nine points.
