Residents quietly working to safeguard local history Continued from page 4 5 · Thursday, March 1, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com With Oakvillegreen, Brock has taken part in community tree plantings and is an urban forest tree volunteer. She has also become the lead on the Oakvillegreen Biodiversity Education project, which works with area schools to provide inclass environmental education. Brock is also the community representative of the Sunningdale Dreamacres project, which is responsible for the ongoing naturalization of the Sunningdale schoolyard. "I always feel a little embarrassed to be personally acknowledged because it was definitely a team effort. There are lots of amazing people in the community who really watch out for trees and the natural heritage system," said Brock. "Natural heritage is important. By acknowledging it at these awards tonight, it really brings it home just how vital it is to our community." Evelyn Bullied received a Lifetime Achievement Award for volunteering with the Oakville Historical Society for more than 20 years. She has also donated her time and efforts to the Trafalgar Township Historical Society. Bullied served on the Oakville Historical Society board of directors for many years and while she stepped down in 2009 she remains an active volunteer. One of the most important of Bullied's many roles with the Oakville Historical Society involved maintaining the library and reading room, which are open to the public for research. Margaret Buxton, who received the Lieutenant Governor's Ontario Heritage Award in Toronto last Friday, also received a letter of recognition from the Town for her decades of volunteer work. Buxton has volunteered with the Oakville Historical Society for almost 30 years, serving as an archivist. She has been responsible for the cataloging and documentation of hundreds of historic resources from photographs to maps and more. Buxton has also served multiple terms on the Oakville Historical Society board of directors. "This is really an honour," said Buxton of being recognized. "I think it's a good idea to recognize people that volunteer time because we need more volunteers everywhere. Everywhere is crying out for people to volunteer. When you get a little recognition and publicity, it might give someone else the idea to do some volunteer work." Free Quotes AMAZING RATES! Fast Service...
