Hornets hanging tough with London If the London Devilettes felt facing the Oakville Hornets in the opening round of the Provincial Women's Hockey League playoffs was going to be easy, they were in for a shock. Oakville stunned the host Devilettes Saturday in the opening game of the teams' best-of-five series, pulling off a 2-1 upset and stealing home-ice advantage in the series. London rebounded Sunday to tie the series with a 5-2 win, but the Hornets -- who finished 25 points behind the Devilettes during the regular season -- will be home for the next two games of the series. Victoria Bach and Heather Platt scored goals 1:15 apart in the second period Saturday as the Hornets erased a 1-0 deficit, then held on for the win. Camille Leonard made 32 saves for the Hornets, who outshot their hosts 36-33. The Devilettes came back with a much more determined effort Sunday, outshooting Oakville 16-1 in the opening period to build an early 4-0 lead. Marie-Pierre Pelissou and Bach cut London's lead in half with second-period markers, but the Devilettes added an insurance marker in the third. Leonard made 38 saves in the loss. The series resumes tomorrow (Thursday) at Joshua's Creek Arenas, an 8 p.m. start. The winner of that game will have a chance to finish off its opponent in Game 4 Friday, beginning at 8:30 p.m. A fifth game, if necessary, would be played Sunday in London.
