14 ·The IFP· Halton Hills ·Tuesday, January 24, 2012 SPORTS & LEISURE Raiders clip Wings for sixth time The Georgetown Raiders completed a 6-0-0 season sweep of the Hamilton Red Wings with a 6-0 victory at the Alcott Arena Saturday evening in Ontario Junior Hockey League action. Stephen Genua and Ryan Lopes had two goals apiece against the shortstaffed Wings, with Tyson Fawcett and Jake Emilio also scoring. Stephen Racine had to make 18 saves for the shutout, his second with the Raiders in eight starts, all wins. Despite losing just two of their past 19 games, the Raiders are five points back of Oakville for first place in the OJHL's West Division, although the Blades hold three games in hand. This week, the Raiders will visit Brampton Thursday and then have an opportunity to earn four points in one evening against the 5-34-0 Capitals at home Saturday. The teams met on the opening night of the regular season on Sept. 10 in Georgetown. With the Caps leading 1-0 after two periods, the ice-resurfacing machine malfunctioned and the remainder of the game was postponed until this Saturday. Rosters for both teams have changed considerably since then, with the Capitals, who have lost 11 straight games, having sold off many veteran players. The third period of the postponed contest will be played first starting at 7:30 p.m., followed by the regularly scheduled game. Georgetown will also visit the Burlington Cougars Sunday afternoon. The Raiders have 10 games remaining in the regular season, including four with Brampton, two each against Burlington and Buffalo, as well as meetings with Milton and Orangeville. Hill honoured by Baseball Canada Gillies claims bronze in skeleton event After placing fifth in his first run, local native Corey Gillies turned in a near-flawless second trip down the mountain to grab a bronze medal in the skeleton competition at last week's Innsbruck 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Patscherkofel, Austria. Gillies, who turned 16 last week, moved with his family to Calgary from Georgetown two years ago in order to train at the Canada Olympic Park facilities there and he's rapidly developed into one of the world's best for his age group. Sebastian Berneker of Germany earned the gold medal with a two-run total time of 1:52.73. Gillies now moves on to the Junior World Championships this week, which will also be held at Innsbruck. The 30-year-old right-handed pitcher shrugged off the arm injuries that have hampered his Major League career to help Canada earn the gold medal at the IBAF Pan-Am Games in Mexico, dominating the host team in the semifinals. The former Montreal Expo and Toronto Blue Jay was also dominant in victories over Japan and the U.S. at the IBAF World Cup in Panama as Canada earned bronze medals. Hill and wife Ashley, who reside in Florida, also celebrated the birth of their first child, with daughter Faith Avery Hill arriving on Nov. 16.
