Residents picket cell tower Residents in the area of Bronte Road and Rebecca Street once again congregated in front of the area's cell tower at Fire Station No. 1 Wednesday to tell Bell to back off. About 40 residents protested, waving colourful signs that read, `Shame on You Bell' and `No Bell Antennas Near Homes and Schools'. Area children could be seen chanting `Say No to Bell' by the roadside and attracting honks of support from passing motorists. The residents are angry about a recent Oakville Town council decision to give Halton police a green light to enter an agreement with Bell Mobility to co-locate on the police cell tower. Previously the area cell tower had only been used for emergency response communications. Now residents fear the health impacts that commercialization of the tower may have on the sur- rounding community. "Today we are here and we are asking Bell not to turn on those antennas and to take them down," said protester Wendy Cockburn. "(Students from) St. Dominic's are also here to say they do not want these antennas in our community affecting the schoolyard. We really just want to say that we're not going away until the antennas go away." The protest comes less than a week after a community meeting that featured Trent University associate professor Dr. Magda Havas and attracted some 200 people. Discussion considered links between radiation from cell towers and cancer. Many studies discussed at that meeting flew in the face of Health Canada's position that there is no scientific reason to consider cell phone towers dangerous to the public.
