www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, March 15, 2012 · 8 More research needed Continued from page 6 What Dr. Nosal has not apparently read is a 2011 study out of Brazil that showed people living in close proximity to cellular towers had a higher incidence of cancer than those who live farther away -- more evidence is needed. Unfortunately, senior Oakville officials have been meeting with industry lobbyists and Industry Canada engineers, and now want to abandon the precautionary principle in Oakville. On March 19, the Oakville Planning and Development Council will meet to finalize its cell tower protocol based on recommendations from the same senior staff to eliminate the 200metre setback from homes and health facilities. They report they are doing this because Industry Canada officials say that anything health-related is not within the purview of a municipal protocol. Yet, the Industry Canada Circular states in Section 4.1: "Industry Canada believes that any concerns or suggestions expressed by land use authorities (municipalities like Oakville) are important elements to be considered by proponents regarding proposals to install, or make changes to antennae systems." Perhaps the Town would consider asking Industry Canada officials to appear before council on Monday and address this discrepancy, which is unacceptable. I fully support the Town and congratulate council in the 200-metre setback, and encourage councillors not to abandon the setback in its final protocol. I commit to actively promote, and defend the 200-metre setback with Industry Canada and my government in the coming weeks and months. Just last year, good corporate citizen Rogers officials met with me, and respected local residents' concerns by withdrawing their proposal to place a cellular tower at Hopedale Mall. However, Bell Canada has now refused to even discuss moving their antennae at the fire station in Bronte, about which local residents are very concerned. The Town owns the tower and the property, and Town Council approved the installation in December. To address local concerns, council should reopen the issue at Bronte and withdraw its consent to Bell's installation. Editor's Note: In a report to Town council, the Region's Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Bob Nosal, stated there is "no convincing or consistent evidence that the weak radiofrequency signals from base stations cause adverse health effects." He also acknowledged, in the report, the agreement between Health Canada, the World Health Organization, and the International Agency for Research on Cancer and that additional research is warranted. shelves at the Fareshare Food Bank. food for thought: Volunteer executive-director Dudley Clark helps restock the MICHAEL IVANIN / OAKVILLE BEAVER Student volunteers needed for Fareshare's Easter food drive Fareshare Food Bank is looking for some helping hands this month.
