Masterworks takes on Mahler symphony By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Masterworks of Oakville chorus and orchestra will be making a big undertaking when it performs a pair of concerts on Friday and Saturday (March 23 and 24). The group of 90 orchestra players and 80 choristers will be performing Gustav Mahler's Resurrection Symphony. "This is a very special event. As far as I know, there's never been a Mahler symphony played in Oakville. The Mahler symphonies are really big, huge undertakings," said Charles Demuynck, music director. "It's a big effort for us to put it on but it's absolutely worth it. It's very special music." Charles Demuynck, conductor Masterworks of Oakville TM "It's a big effort for us to put it on but it's absolutely worth it. It's very special music, extremely engaging music." There are several reasons why Mahler's symphonies are seldom performed. For one, they require a large group, Demuynck said, and they require an excellent group of Youthful, vibrant environment. "It's a big challenge for us but I can definitely say people will find it a wonderful experience," he said. "At different times, the brass players will be playing from the lobby and different parts of the church, giving a surround sound effect. This is what the composer wanted. This is what he intended." The music itself is a story telling. This piece is about a person who dies and his or her journey from death to resurrection in heaven. The music itself will sound familiar to people, Demuynck added, because there are modernday film composers who have borrowed the late-Romantic composer's style. "I can't say enough about how special and amazing a piece it is. Everybody should try to do their best to come because it's going to be a big event," Demuynck said. Two vocal soloists will join the chorus and orchestra for the performance. The two guests are Oakville's Marian Sjolander and Kyle Engler from Baltimore. The Friday and Saturday concerts begin at 8 p.m. at St. Matthews Roman Catholic Church, located at 1150 Monks Passage. Tickets cost $25 for general admission or $20 for students and children.
