Town marks Lorne Scots' 145th anniversary The Town of Halton Hills marked the 145th anniversary of the Lorne Scots-Peel Dufferin Halton Regiment with a plaque and street renaming ceremony recently. Mayor Rick Bonnette announced the plaque has now been installed on the Georgetown Fairgrounds entrance gates. "I am proud to recognize the 145th anniversary of the Lorne Scots with the designation of "Lorne Scots' Way" on the gates leading into the Georgetown Fairgrounds," said Bonnette. "The recognition of the Lorne Scots is appropriate, as their motto is "For Our Heritage" and I am pleased to be able to acknowledge their contribution to the town. This is a great fit as the Lorne Scots trained right beside the gates in the old Armory building. I can't think of a better location to honor the Lorne Scots." Lorne Scot Commanding Officer L/Col Andre Phelps thanked the Town for the honour, saying, "We are celebrating our 145th anniversary this year (2011). A lot of good soldiers and a lot of good deeds have been done over that timeframe and it's nice to be recognized by you." The 36th Peel Battallion and the Halton Battalion of Infantry were formed in 1866. Seventy years later the two regiments were reorganized to form the Lorne Scots-Peel, Dufferin and Halton Regiment. The unit has been represented at various world championships like the Olympics and Pan-American Games. The Regiment has provided troops to many of the United Nations peacekeeping forces that Canada has participated in places such as Cyprus and Cambodia and more recently in Afghanistan.
