Halton residents continue to embrace the Region's waste diversion programs including weekly GreenCart and Blue Box collection. As a result, single family homes in the Region have been able to divert 60 per cent of their waste from Halton's landfill site. According to Ontario benchmarking, Halton Region has the highest rate of waste diversion in the province. Together with residents, Halton Region is now working toward a new waste diversion goal of 65 per cent. This month, Halton Region will resume the popular monthly bulk waste collection for residential households in all urban and rural areas, except for Halton Hills collection areas one and two. Bulk waste is considered a large household item that is over 23 kg (50 lbs) or that will not fit into a closed garbage bag or container such as furniture, bundled flooring or wood and windows. Items such as metal and appliances, electronics and tires are not accepted as bulk waste but you can dial 311 or visit www.halton.ca/waste to learn about options to recycle these materials. Each collection truck visits approximately 1,000 households per day so it is important to remember that there is a three item limit for bulk items set out. Remember to check your 2012 Bulk waste collection resumes Gary Carr Waste Management Guide and Collection Calendar to find your specific bulk collection dates along with information on additional programs to help you continue to reduce, reuse and recycle. Items picked up as part of the bulk collection program are disposed of in the landfill so before you place them out for collection consider giving items in good condition to a local reuse centre.
