8 ·The IFP· Halton Hills ·Tuesday, February 14, 2012 SPORTS & LEISURE By EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer A late regular-season push has elevated the Georgetown Raiders into top spot in the 27-team Ontario Junior Hockey League. After posting a 10-2 victory over the visiting Buffalo Jr. Sabres Saturday and a 6-0 win in Burlington over the Cougars Sunday afternoon, the 39-9-1 Raiders are riding an 11-game win streak (including the Jan. 28 triumph against Brampton to complete a postponed encounter from Sept. 10) and earned a firstround bye for the playoffs. Georgetown finished tied with the Newmarket Hurricanes for first overall in the OJHL with 79 points, and although the Raiders lost both regular-season meetings to the 'Canes, head coach and general manager Greg Walters's squad won the tiebreaker with more OT victories. As the West Division champions for the first time since 200809, the Raiders will await the results of best-of-5 quarterfinal series between Buffalo vs. Hamilton and Burlington vs. Milton and won't play again until the Raiders are top dogs First in OJHL heading into post-season second round begins Feb. 22. "We've been on a good run and the guys can't wait to start the playoffs," said Walters, in his second year with the Raiders. "I'm not huge on the bye, but it is what it is. We'll have the week off to get prepared and hopefully we'll know sooner rather than later who we'll meet up with. We're going to have to scout a bunch of teams." The Raiders received a scare when veteran forward Caleb Apperson was involved in a knee-toknee collision in the first period Saturday and didn't return to action. Walters said Apperson is day to day with the injury. Tyson Fawcett, Stephen Genua and Nick Perruccio scored twice each against the thirdplace Jr. Sabres, with Matt Chiarantano, Brendan Woods, Jeremy DeFazio and Alex Lubczuk adding single markers. Steven Racine earned his fourth shutout and is now 15-0-0 in the Raider goal following Sunday's regular-season finale with the Cougars. Chiarantano, Fawcett, Perruccio, Jacob Bauchman, Ryan Lopes and Braden Kavaratzis were the marksmen. Christ the King's Pat Gough makes a behind-the-back pass that led to a goal for Jaguar teammate Daryl Hanzelka during their 4-1 win over the Nelson Flames on Thursday in a Halton Secondary School Athletic Association senior boys' hockey contest at the Alcott Arena. With the victory, the Jaguars moved into first place in the HSSAA Tier I division with a 5-1-1 record. Gough, captain Tyler Topham and T.J. Baker also scored for CtK Thursday, with Joey Bonsignore earning the W in goal. The Georgetown Rebels dropped to 2-5-0 after a 4-3 loss to Burlington Central last week. The fourth-place Hawks defeated the fifth-place Rebels in their regular season meeting 6632 in December, but much has changed for GDHS coach Steve Pettit's side since then. They won a tournament at Bishop Reding and were finalists at another event in Woodstock earlier this month, while posting exhibition wins in Holland, N.Y. and Waterford, Mich. If the Rebels get past Loyola, a showdown with undefeated Holy Trinity of Oakville looms on Thursday in the semifinals. In their regular-season finale Thursday, Georgetown's seniors lost 66-48 to second-place Notre Dame in Burlington despite holding the lead in the third quarter. Alex Garvey had 28 points for the Rebels and Sebastian Beckett added 13. In junior action, the Rebels, with three starting Grade 9s, dropped a 56-36 decision Thursday at Notre Dame to finish the campaign at 2-8. GIRLS' HOCKEY: The Acton Bearcats came up just short of their first victory of the season Thursday, edged by Aldershot 7-5. Jessica Cutting (2), Christine Bennett, Savannah Muir and Emma Dafoe were the Bearcat goal scorers. SWIMMING: Having won the last three Ontario overall team championship titles, the Georgetown Rebels won't have to go far to defend their titles. Slated to be held at the Etobicoke Olympium March 6-7, the event has been moved to the Milton Sports Centre on the originally scheduled dates due to the uncertainty surrounding labour negotiations in the City of Toronto. The Golden Horseshoe OFSAA qualifier will be held Wednesday at the University of Guelph. Shieh shines Recently elevated to the National Youth Division of the men's artistic discipline by Gymnastics Canada, Georgetown's Eric Shieh placed second overall in his age group at a competition earlier this month in Ottawa. The Grade 10 Georgetown District High School student, who trains with Gymnastics Mississauga, received a gold medal on the pommel horse, silver on rings and bronzes for both the parallel bars and high bar. With that performance, Shieh earned an invitation to the Kyle Shewfelt Gymnastics Festival at the University of Calgary March 2527. He turns 15 this Saturday.
