Students rally for right to wear shorts Continued from pg. 1 a Facebook page entitled "Shorts Day", calling for kids to join in and protest the rule by wearing shorts Wednesday. "Wednesday is going to 26 degrees and I'm not sweating my ass off all day in pants! If you're with us join in the protest and wear shorts on Wednesday. I think we're all tired of these bull.... rules so spread the word and let's change something!" it was stated on the Facebook page. So on Wednesday, Gomes estimates about 150 or so students wore their uniform shorts to school and he said they were called down to the cafeteria in the morning. He said they were originally told they would be facing an in-school suspension that day, but the school's vice-principal Gord McCarles changed his mind and the students were allowed to go back to class. Gomes said the vice-principal told the students, "we went about it the wrong way." So they decided to come up with a petition calling for students being allowed to wear shorts before May 1. As of Wednesday afternoon, more than 200 students had signed it, said Gomes. "There is no need for this rule," said Aaron Jackson, another Grade 12 student who wore shorts Wednesday. He said prior to this he wasn't aware there was a specified date students could wear shorts. "If it's uniform, and it's hot out, we should be allowed to wear our shorts," said Gomes. Gomes and Jackson said the students were also told they can't wear their shorts Thursday either. "They tell us to dress for the weather. Wear a sweater it's cold out," said one of 5 The IFP · Halton Hills, Thursday, March 22, 2012 WEEKEND FORECAST... McCarles said the students can wear shorts to school in May, June and September. "Typically it's cold up until then (May)," said McCarles, adding, however, it has been unseasonably warm. But he said the school is quite cool, as it's air-conditioned. He said he suggested to the students who showed up in shorts Wednesday they put a proposal together and they can meet with the principal about the issue this morning (Thursday). "We encourage direct, open communication with the students," said McCarles. He was not aware of the students receiving the in-school suspension Monday for wearing shorts. "We deal with uniform infractions all the time," he said.
