The popular all-ages fundraising event, hosted by the Burloak Canoe Club, will be held in downtown Oakville on Friday, May 4. The 8@8 Road Race features an eightkilometre road race, a 3.5km walk, a 1km kids run and post-race celebrations. Organizers have also announced the introduction of a team challenge event. Groups of adults or youths can enter, with the chance of winning an on-water, team-building g dragon g boat session for up to 20 people. Teams and individuals can register and pick up their race kits on race day between 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Burloak Canoe Club, located at 160 Water St., or from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Running Company, located at 114 Lakeshore Road E. The road race and walk will begin at 8 p.m., preceded by the kids' run at 7:30 p.m. All proceeds from the Burloak 8@8 Road Race will benefit the Burloak Canoe Club's world-class programs, p g , facilities and athletes. Entry fees prior to April 15 are $40 for individuals and $10 for children. The price includes participation in one race, a technical t-shirt and admission to post-race celebrations that will feature a gourmet barbecue and a live band. Tickets for the celebration only are available for $20 each. Van Koeverden d finalist f l for top male athlete award Burloak Canoe Club kayaker Adam van Koeverden has been named as one of three finalists for the Ontario Sport Awards' male athlete of the year. The three-time Olympic medalist won both the K-1 (kayaking singles) 500-metre and 1,000m events at the national canoe/kayak championships in 2011. This year, van Koeverden won his first world championship in the K-1 1,000m, prevailing by more than three seconds. Patrick Chan (figure skating) and Eric Lamaze (equestrian) are the other finalists for the award. The winner will be announced at the Ontario Sports Award ceremony y April 19 in Toronto.
