18 The IFP · Halton Hills, Thursday, April 5, 2012 Local trio are Rebel rousers By EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer Three Halton Hills residents who began their minor hockey careers together in Georgetown have reunited on the Mississauga Rebels' team that recently won the Greater Toronto Hockey League midget AAA championship and is in Sault Ste. Marie this week for the all-Ontario finals. Georgetown's Zach Fung and Brett Pierce, along with Michael Courvoisier of Acton, are all forwards for the powerhouse Rebels, owners of a 587-2 overall record this season. The Rebels went 11-0 in the playoffs, sweeping the Toronto Titans and Toronto Jr. Canadiens 4-0 each before outscoring the Toronto Youth Nationals 12-1 over three games in the GTHL championship series to qualify for the Ontario Hockey Federation Telus Cup Central Region Championships being held this week in the Soo. Fung, an 18-year-old right-winger who began the season with the Georgetown Jr. A Raiders, had a hat trick and two assists in Monday's tournament-opening 7-1 victory over the Northern Ontario representative Sudbury Wolves. But the Rebels suffered their first SPORTS & LEISURE loss in several weeks Tuesday, a 4-2 defeat against the Whitby Wildcats in game two of the round robin. Mississauga faced the host Soo North Stars Wednesday afternoon and takes on the Ottawa Jr. 67s Thursday, finishing of the preliminary round against the London Jr. Knights Friday. The semifinals are set for Saturday and the finals on Sunday. If the Rebels win the OHF tournament, they'll advance to the Telus Cup national championship in Leduc, Alta. April 23-29. Winners of the Don Mills Flyers' Earlybird Tournament at the Golden Horseshoe event in Burlington this season, the Rebels earned bronze at last year's midget provincials and missed out on a chance to play in the Telus Cup. Mississauga head coach Jamie Caruso said his troops are determined not to miss out this year. "They know this is their last kick at the can, so they have to make the best of it," he said. "I think we'll have one of the oldest teams in the tournament, so hopefully that maturity will show and result in a really mature effort." --With files from the Mississauga News Long arm of the law? The CAHT held a two-day training camp in Georgetown and made its final selections for the squad that will play at the world championships in Finland later this month, then went out and defeated the HRPS 4-2, clinched with a last-second empty-net goal. The amount raised by the charity game for the HRPS's Special Olympics Torch Run and the other benefactor, the CAHT, has yet to be finalized. The 14-year-old Fox was runner-up in the 100m and 200m backstroke and third in the 100m freestyle, along with a fourth in the 200m free. Thanks in part to those performances, Fox has been selected to Swim Ontario's Train to Compete squad, which will convene in London in mid-April. Blue Fin Keri-Lyn Copeland was also a strong competitor at the championship, placing fifth in 100m freestyle and eighth in 200m free.
