Groundbreaking will be Wednesday, April 25 for the first phase of the planned 500,000 sq. ft. centre called Toronto Premium Outlets. The mall is to house more than 100 quality outlet stores and is expected to be the entry point for selected upscale U.S. retailers and designer brands. The mall is a 50/50 joint venture between Canadianbased Calloway REIT and The Simon Property Group, owner and operator of the popular factory Premium Outlets in the U.S. At this point there are no retailer announcements; those are expected to come closer to the centre's opening. Julie Conroy named Acton Citizen of Year By LISA TALLYN Staff Writer Community volunteer Julie Conroy was "overwhelmed" and "surprised" when she heard she had been named the Rotary Club of Acton's 2012 Citizen of the Year. She thought Rotary Club member Bob MacKinnon, owner of MacKinnon Family Funeral Home, was calling to tell her about an upcoming funeral lunch she and the other Legion Ladies Auxiliary would be catering at the Legion, but instead he shared the good news. Her initial reaction was that maybe she shouldn't accept, but she changed her mind thinking it might "inspire someone else to get out there and help other people." Conroy who likes to be busy, and jokes she doesn't have time to get sick, is involved with several groups in town including the Parish of St. Joseph's Patron of Canada Church, the Catholic Women's League, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 197 and the Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She's also very involved with Acton Seniors' Centre-- serving on the board, organizing events and trips and writing the Seniors' Centre's column for the local newspapers. MacKinnon said being named the Rotary Club of Acton's Citizen of the Year is "well-deserved" for Conroy who has been nominated for numerous years. She was selected by three former Citizens of the Year from a list of worthy candidates. Conroy initially became more involved as a volunteer in Acton to fill a void after her husband Kevin died in 2002. At that time she took over his commitments as the Poppy Drive co-ordinator for Lakeview subdivision and planting geraniums on Acton veteran's graves on Decoration Day-- two volunteer tasks she continues to do today. At the Acton Seniors Centre Conroy serves as Public Relations Chair. "I help serve dinners and have done publicity for the papers for eight years," said Conroy. She also takes photographs of events at the Centre used in the newspapers. "I'm here quite a lot," she said. At the Centre, Conroy started a group called "Girls on the Go" for women who don't have partners to do things with.
