www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, April 6, 2012 · 14 Lock up your valuables before holiday travel Halton police are reminding vacationing residents to lock their doors and windows before leaving for the holiday weekend and thereby make things more difficult for potential thieves. Police said long weekends where residents are gone for an extended period of time present an opportunity for thieves to break into homes and steal items such as purses, electronics, jewelry and even highend automobiles. "Culprits specifically target homes that are unoccupied while residents are away for the weekend," said Det.-Sgt. Anthony Odoardi, Halton police. "Especially during holiday events." Odoardi said these types of crimes have occurred over a widespread area in Oakville and although police will be out in full force this weekend patrolling residential communities, they are asking citizens to be extra vigilant in reporting any suspicious vehicles or people in their neighbourhoods. Police would like to remind homeowners to: · Lock all doorways, including inside garage and patio doors and remove garage door openers from vehicles · Install locking mechanisms on gates to yards · Secure all windows · Install motion-sensor lighting or keep exterior lighting on overnight · Secure or remove all high-value removable items from your home when absent for extended periods of time, including cash, jewelry, keys to expensive cars, etc. · If you encounter someone in your home, do not confront them -- call 911 immediately.
