Ribfest organizers seek volunteers for three-day event Continued from page 1 on charities, not taking any money for administrative purposes. As such, Rotary will try to have volunteers do as much of the work as possible, thereby reducing event costs, which will result in more money going to community charities. The organization hopes to attract volunteers aged 14 and up, and it needs an army of them, said Gwen Angell-Mighton, chair of the ribfest volunteer committee. "I thought of a challenge for our Rotarians. We're looking at more than 500 shifts to be covered for this event over three days. So maybe you could reach out to 10 friends, family, children, grandchildren, neighbours, anybody you know and see if you can help recruit them because we're in great need in a very short time frame," said Angell-Mighton, addressing the Rotarians. "It's doable. We do it every year. We've pulled everything off that we've ever tried. I'm not in doubt, but this time we have to work a little harder. So if you could reach out to 10 people or you have to do 10 shifts yourself." The volunteer scheduling will be done online, through a website that will launch sometime in April. People will be able to register and indicate available times for shifts and will receive confirmation afterward. Approximately half the volunteers will be required for recycling duty as the ribfest committee is trying to make this a green event. "When I saw your ad in The Oakville Beaver, I thought it was a great opportunity for us," Angell-Mighton read. "So, I brought the ad to my group and we'd be happy to volunteer at the Oakville ribfest. So, if you're okay with this then can you please get back to me for what we would have to do? For example, we could be making ribs or helping serve, set up and clean up. Thank you very much and hopefully you can find room for all of us to help." Aside from the call out for volunteers, members of the Rotary club and guests, including sponsors, heard some of the updates about the ribfest, which will take place on the grounds of Oakville's Sheridan College. Knowing there is a great need for volunteers, Angell-Mighton read a letter from a local 14-year-old boy, saying she hopes to find more youths with such enthusiasm. The teen is a member of the Squires Circle of the Knights of Columbus in Oakville who saw an advertisement in the newspaper for a need for volunteers.
