www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, April 18, 2012 · 10 Photo contest aims to attract young volunteers Continued from page 5 Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr, Oakville Mayor Rob Burton, Burlington Mayor Rick Goldring, and Halton Hills Mayor Rick Bonnette, along with Nina Truscott, Community Development Halton (CDH) board president, were at the breakfast to present the volunteer awards. "We want to acknowledge and make public the work that is so often done in private in hopes that others will follow your example," Truscott told volunteers. Selected from among nearly 300 applicants, 13 individuals from across Halton were the recipients of the 2012 Cheers to Volunteers Awards, including Oakville's Keelee Buhlau, from Community Youth in Action Network (CYAN); George Caldwell, of Halton Healthcare Oakville; and Michelle Ng, from the YMCA of Oakville. Four volunteers were also recognized from more than 35 nominees and received a 2012 Community Volunteer Award, including Colin Woodcock of Oakville's Kiwanis Meals on Wheels. To help students rack up volunteer hours in a fun way during the three-week long Change The World campaign, CDH is holding a photo contest. To be eligible, students must take 10 original photos -- between April 15-May 6 -- of community-related themes, including teamwork, caring, growth, building, community, action, support, participation, volunteering, diversity, youth and seniors. For complete rules, visit www.volunteerhalton.ca, click on the Change The World link under the Volunteer Celebrations tab and select Community Through My Eyes photo contest. CAW hosts town hall The Canadian Auto Workers Union (CAW) Local 707 will hold an Auto Jobs in Our Community town hall meeting on Wednesday, April 25, at the CAW 707 Union Hall, located at 475 North Service Rd. E. During the meeting, the union, which represents the hourly workforce at the Ford Oakville Assembly Complex, will discuss the importance of auto jobs, the threats facing the industry and the CAW's proposals to strengthen these jobs in the future. The speakers at this event will include CAW President Ken Lewenza. Officials from the CAW Local 707 said the union works not only to protect the interests of its members, but also serves the community surrounding it. This can be seen, they said, in the union contributing more than $400,000 to the United Way of Oakville and in numerous other examples. For information, visit www.local707caw.ca. Fresh & Flavourful!
