Targeting 33 locations Continued from page 1 5 · Thursday, April 19, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com Now, in its 21st year, the event has historically been very successful for the town. "Oakville residents and students have responded really well to this event which is the largest community-wide cleanup in Canada during Earth Week," said Joe Di Paolo, board member of Earth Day Canada, in a press release. Over its history, the event has had more than 64,000 student and citizen volunteers and has saved more than just the town's environment. "The cleanup campaign promotes awareness and respect for local nature and our trails, parks and waterways. We are beautifying the local natural environment, protecting wildlife and benefiting people's health while encouraging environmental activism in our schools and throughout our community," said Di Paolo. "In addition, it saves tens of thousands of dollars a year for the local taxpayers." The rain-or-shine event will have some Town councillors present -- Pam Damoff and Tom Adams will be on hand to pitch in at various sites. Twelve local schools will also participate in the cleanup. As safety is one of the primary concerns for the event, the Town of Oakville is donating work gloves and garbage bags to the clean up. Residents are encouraged to watch out for hazards such as broken glass, syringes and sharp metal objects. "The cleanup will allow everyone to enjoy garbage-free parks and trails this spring and summer. The environment is everyone's responsibility and we can all do much more to better protect and enhance nature," said Di Paolo. Many other schools and businesses across town are holding clean up events on Friday, April 20. For more information or the nearest cleanup site, visit www.oakvillepeacecentre.org.
