Description
Brothers William and Richard Oughtred came in 1831 from Guiseborough, England. The families settled in the small hamlet of Hammondville, Trafalgar Township, which later became Sheridan, and was located at the junction of Town Line, now Winston Churchill Boulevard, and the Middle Road which is now the Queen Elizabeth Way.

According to the "Clarkson Book" posted by The City of Mississauga and linked to this record, Richard's son Stephen, pictured here, came a few years later.

When it was necessary to rename Hammondsville, Richard, who was a blacksmith by trade and who enjoyed literature, suggested "Sheridan", after the Irish poet Richard Brinsley Sheridan.

Richard died in 1881 and Stephen inherited the farm and brick house. The Oughtred family home in Sheridan was torn down in 1939-1940 when the QEW was built to curve south through Sheridan.

The Oughtred family were very successful strawberry farmers into the 1960's in the Clarkson - Sheridan area.

Stephen and Sarah are buried at Springcreek Cemetery, Clarkson Road, Mississauga.
