Brawl leads to one charge Clean sweep A 19-year-old Oakville man is facing an assault charge in connection with a brawl, which broke out in the parking lot of St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic High School Monday. Halton police responded to the school, at 1550 Nottinghill Gate, around 3 p.m., after initially receiving reports that as many as 100 youths were involved in the altercation. Police said they now believe that, as students were leaving the school for the day, many of the youths seen in the parking lot were onlookers while only a few were fighting. The alleged incident involved both Loyola students and non-Loyola youths and police reported that at one point a wrench and a baseball bat were used to make threats. No one was struck with these weapons, which were seized by school staff. Two Loyola students received minor facial injuries during the fight. Medical attention was brought to the scene, but was not needed. "When police arrived, the suspects had fled in a vehicle," said Det. Sgt. Anthony Odoardi, Oakville Criminal Investigations Bureau. "Eight of them were arrested when a van was pulled over. As police continued the roadside investigation one was charged and seven were subsequently released unconditionally." Police say they are unclear as to what motivated the fight. Investigtion continues. Shabir Abedi, 19, of Oakville, who is not a student at Loyola, faces a charge of assault with a weapon. Anyone with additional information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Oakville Criminal Investigations Bureau, High School Liaison Branch at 905-825-4747, ext. 2216, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), www.haltoncrimestoppers.com or by texting `Tip201' with a message to 274637 (crimes). 3 · Friday, April 20, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com nikki wesley / OAKVILLE BEAVER / @halton_photog for earth day: Leanne Alphonso, 10, helps as St. Andrew Catholic Elementary School students clean up the field around River Oaks Arena during St. Andrew's special Earth Hour Eco Day event.
