Local osteoporosis specialist receives international honour Dr. Aliya Khan recently received the International Society of Clinical Densitometry's (ISCD) 2011 International Clinician Instructor of the Year Award -- she is only the second Canadian to ever receive the prestigious honour. "Dr. Khan is a dedicated geriatrician, a passionate educator, and an inspiring mentor. This award acknowledges the extensive work and teaching she has done in the field of metabolic bone disease," Dr. David McConachie, Halton Healthcare Services (HHS) chief of the department of medicine, said in news release. A specialist in osteoporosis at HHS, Khan is also a clinical professor of medicine at McMaster University and director of the calcium disorders clinic at St. Joseph's Healthcare in Hamilton. As past chair of the ISCD Certification Council, Khan led the development of the certification exams, which are now taken by specialists globally. Khan is also a member of the HHS Department of Medicine and has been a director of Geriatric Services at Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) and chair of the OTMH Rehab and Geriatric Committee. In 1992, she developed the OTMH Geriatric Hip Fracture Program -- a crossprovince program, which focuses on treating osteoporosis, the underlying cause of fractures. Currently, Khan sees all hip-fracture patients admitted to OTMH and works closely with the HHS Bone Density Screening Program.
