Oakville brought home the Division 2, Tier 1 silver medal after Durham ended its winning ways with a 25-10, 25-18 victory in final. Oakville, who lost three starters to injury during the tournament, had beaten Durham in pool play, 25-17, 25-18. Oakville beat Barrie Predators Purple 25-22, 25-16 in the semifinals to assure itself a medal. In the quarter-finals, Oakville edged the Waterloo Tigers Black 25-23 in the opening set, before completing the sweep with a 25-12 victory. Oakville opened the tournament with one of its closest matches, edging the Blenheim Ballhawks 25-23, 25-20 in its opener. It followed that with victories over Durham and Oakville's Lakeside to finish Friday's play at 3-0. The following day, Oakville swept the Stratford Stingers, Sudbury's Northern Chill and Toronto's Diamonds, but had their first player sidelined by an ankle injury. Oakville kept winning in the playoff round despite losing a second starter to a wrist injury in the semifinals. The Thunder lost its third starter just a few points into the gold-medal game. Missing three key players and having others playing out of position, they weren't able to fend off Durham for a second time. Despite the loss, the team will be competing at the National Volleyball Championships at the Direct Energy Centre in Toronto, May 17-22. Members of the Thunder's silver medal team are: Lauren Kane, Jordan Dixon, Olivia Oberholster, Patricia Gombas, Erica Witt, Jessica Arnds, Madeline Dunn, Valentina Zapata, Amanda Prestidge and Kaitlyn Brooks. The team is coached by Lou Foresto and Herb Arnds. Rookie coach a role model for players Continued from page 44 `That's a really good idea,' so I ordered them," said Medeiros. "Now whenever I go to reach for a cookie or something I shouldn't be having, I always think about it. She's the most inspirational person I've met." xpectations were not sky high for the Hornets this season. The team lost nine players to another organization and Turczyniak said the hope was the team would make the playoffs. The Hornets not only made the playoffs -- after finishing third in the Central West Division with a 14-6-2 record -- they knocked off Mississauga, St. Catharines and Rochester on their way to winning the division and advancing to the Lower Lakes Female Hockey League's final four. There, the Hornets fell 5-2 to the 20-1-1 Toronto Aeros in the goldmedal game. At the recent provincial championships, the Hornets made it to the quarter-finals before being eliminated by Thunder Bay, which went on to claim the Ontario title. Medeiros said Kendrick stressed "having your teammate's back" both on and off the ice. "You're only as good as those you're surrounded by," Kendrick said. "You can make yourself better by making others better." In that regard, Kendrick is not only coaching the midget team but spent the past week helping at tryouts for bantam and atom teams. It's part of helping to lift the entire organization and the Hornets hope other female coaches will follow Kendrick's lead. "It's not just about making your team the best," she said. "I want to be able to walk into any rink and have any Hornet know me and be able to ask me anything." After just one season, the Hornets' newest female coach is already on her way. "I was in Subway the other day and a girl asked me if I played for the Hornets," Medeiros said. "She said, `What team do you play for?' I told her the AA midgets. She said, `You play for Jackie's team?' You're so lucky.'" --Follow Herb Garbutt on Twitter, @herbgarbutt Vanden Noort Home Improvements 905-842-2868 LANDSCAPING Emerald Landscaping 905-469-0658 A.M.
