The humane society announced recently the launch of its new Metal for Mutts and Meows program at the 445 Cornwall Rd. shelter. The program, being carried out in partnership with Moffat Scrap Iron, has seen a large blue bin placed beside the driveway into the Cornwall Road shelter where members of the community can drop off metal items for recycling. The humane society will receive the proceeds from the metal objects collected in the bin, based on weight. "Your trash can become our treasure and make a world of difference to a homeless or abused animal," said Brenda Dushko, OMHS manager of fund development and media relations. "We are hoping that when people are doing their spring cleaning, they will bring us their metal items; everything from metal cans to old barbecues, metal lawn furniture, old shelving. If it's metal, it can go in our bin and help us change the world for animals in need." The program will run yearround with regular emptying of the bin by Moffat Scrap Iron. The OMHS receives no government funding or funding from any other animal welfare organization to investigate and prosecute animal abuse, cruelty and neglect; to shelter and care for homeless animals and find them loving homes. It is through initiatives like the Metal for Mutts and Meows program that it is able to help vulnerable animals in Oakville and Milton.
