School #5 soon to have name By Kim Arnott SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER West Oak Trails #5 will soon receive its permanent name. A list of three possible names for the new northwest Oakville Catholic elementary school due to open in September on Colonel William Parkway has been approved. The list was sanctioned by trustee of the Halton Catholic District School Board last week. The list, which has been forwarded to Bishop Crosby for consideration, includes the names St. Mary, St. Anne and Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, in order of preference. The Bishop will give the list consideration and approval. The community was asked to vote on St. Mary, St. Anne and St. Jean de Brebeuf as possible names. Alternative names were also solicited. St. Mary was the most popular, chosen by 60 per cent of the families as their first choice. However, the board also received the suggestion the school be named Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha. The first Native American to be canonized, she is scheduled to be made a saint in September, as the new school opens. This would provide an opportunity for students and the school community to identify with the canonization process. Tekakwitha was born in 1656 and baptized by Jesuit missionaries. She eventually became a nun, and is buried in Kahnawake, Québec. 13 · Wednesday, May 9, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com PUBLIC NOTICE Emergency Response Training Exercises Scheduled at Suncor's Oakville Terminal Suncor Energy will be conducting several training exercises throughout the months of May and June 2012.
