With the summer quickly approaching, more and more people are out shopping for a new pair of sunglasses, but not everyone understands the importance of them, nor what to look for when picking them out. At The Optician Inc. the fully-licensed opticians who are all in good standing with The College of Opticians of Ontario understand their client's desire for a fashionable pair of glasses but they are also know that the lenses are what truly makes a pair of sunglasses. Sunglasses protect your sensitive eyes from the sun's UV radiation that can damage not only the skin of your eyelid but also the cornea, lens and other part of the eye. When choosing your next pair of sunglasses, it is vital that you look for the UV-protection detail on the product labels. "Choose sunglasses with lenses that block 99 to 100 per cent of both UVA and UVB rays," The Optician Inc. owner Vik Arora explains. "It is also important to wear sunglasses in the shade, on cloudy days and during the winter as your eyes are still exposed to the UV rays." Other than the UV coating, lenses come in many styles that meet different needs. Polarlized lenses are designed to cut glare due to reflection. This means they are good for driving and outdoor activities in the snow or on water. Photochromic lenses change with the intensity of UV light by turning darker when outdoors and lighter when indoors. If you wear these for driving, choose sunglasses that are fairly dark. "Flash" or mirror lenses reflect all or part of the light instead of absorbing it. They offer no performance advantage as they scratch easily. You should choose a pair with a scratch-resistant coating. It is also important for contact wearers whose lenses have UV protection to still wear sunglasses to protect the area of the eye that is not covered by the lens. Not all sunglasses block 100 percent of UV rays. If you're unsure about the level of UV protection your sunglasses provide, take them to your eye doctor or optician for an evaluation.
