`Incredible' women a powerful inspiration for local students By Meredith Johnson and Katie Cheshire, Grade 10, T.A. Blakelock H.S. couple of weeks ago we were nominated by our counsellors, Mrs. Ramos and Mrs. Yuill, to be members of a group of 10 young women from T.A. Blakelock High School who would attend the annual Women as Career Coaches banquet (WACC). WACC started in 2005, intended to educate and inspire young women. When the group began, the event was a smaller one with only a few hundred attending. It has been growing steadily over the years, and at this recent conference there were about 700 in attendance. We were included in the mix of high school students and initially thought that we were going just for the promised buffet dinner. Little did we know, that we were in for an evening of inspiration and fun. Hosted by the hilarious Poojah Randa, a local TV host, girls from Grades 10-12 from across Halton were invited to interact with high achieving working women from around the community. When first invited we were skeptical. We expected a typical, "You can do what you put your mind to," spiel -- but this was not the case. Our seating arrangement consisted of a mix of professionals and students. This turned out to be great, as we got the opportunity to interact and learn from the women who have already made their way through the working world. The evening was focused around mentorship. We were inspired by the successful journeys the women had in their lives, and career pathways. This was turning into an evening to remember.
