Farmers market moves to open at Dorval Crossing By John Bkila OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF After 33 years at Hopedale Mall, the Civitan Club Farmers Market is relocating as it opens this season. "We were told at the beginning of last season that this would probably be our last (at Hopedale Mall)," said George Horhota, past-president of the Civitan Club of Oakville. A third of the club's revenue comes from the farmers' market ($12,000-$15,000 a year), which in turn is donated to local charities, non-profit organizations and community-based programs that "aren't usually well-funded," Horhota said. For years, the farmers' market could be found in the parking lot in front of the Zellers store at Hopedale Mall, but the club was told by mall management, its lease would not be renewed at the end of November 2011 because there were plans to expand the building and reduce the parking lot space, said Horhota. "The parking area was small enough as it is, so we wouldn't be able to fit there afterwards." Hopedale Mall management declined to comment, but, Horhota says he and market organizers completely understand the decision. "They have their own needs in terms of occupying its space requirements and they've been very generous with the years they've donated this space," he said. The challenge became, for Horhota and Civitan member Doug Guthrie -- who has led the market for more than a dozen years, tracking down vendors -- to find a new home for the farmers' market. "Our first choice really was Dorval Crossing," Horhota said. "We loved the location. It has better visibility than Hopedale, better access and there's a lot more traffic through there." However, Horhota said what clinched the club's decision to make Dorval Crossing East (formerly the Oakville Town Centre) the market's new home was the shopping centre's property manager. "We didn't know how enthusiastic Bentall Kennedy was to have a market. What they're doing (to promote the market) is phenomenal -- they do a mail drop to every home in Oakville four times a year, they're featuring us in each of the mail drops... they're taking out ads in the local papers announcing the market," Horhota said. "They are really doing everything they can to accommodate it and us, to make us feel very welcome." So, Horhota said, the club has renamed its market to the Dorval Crossing Civitan Farmers Market, in recognition of the partnership. The market will have a soft opening at its new 240 North Service Rd. W. location Saturday (May 12) from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. and will be open every Saturday through November -- with an official grand opening event on May 26.
