School is now in session Eagles coach targeting OFSAA gold Continued from page 25 27 · Wednesday, May 16, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com Herron might be the first players people notice on the Abbey Park squad, but Jokic -- who recognized the Eagles' star talent last season while he coached the Nelson Lords in Burlington -- is perhaps more proud of the cast that surrounds the two stars. "As an opposing coach, I knew they had some superstars that their team was based around that we had to shut down," says Jokic. "Now I've taken the opposite approach, trying to bring everyone up around our superstars." The coach credits backs Jamie Leveridge, Doug Dubeau and Woodhead for quickly gelling as a unit. Wings and fullbacks Dan Mathie, Nick Dalby, Darcy Chant, Zach McKenna and Connor Challis have also been key to the Eagles' success, Jokic says. "And I'm very pleased with a lot of our Grade 11s who were juniors last year," Jokic adds. "They're smaller guys who are not afraid and are definitely putting their bodies on the line and trying to outwork everybody else." Bye into Halton final The Eagles, who were scheduled to conclude the regular season yesterday (Tuesday) against the Loyola Hawks, have already locked up a bye into the Halton final. Abbey Park will face either the White Oaks Wildcats or Oakville Trafalgar in next Wednesday's championship game. Jokic knows better to look past the Red Devils -- "As always, they have a fantastic program," he says of OT -- but admits the Eagles' sights aren't just set on a regional title. "If we stay healthy, I see great things," he says. "Our ultimate goal is OFSAA gold, but that road, in most coaches' minds, leads through Streetsville... Our goal is to give them a big game and ultimately come out victorious." -- Jon Kuiperij can be followed on Twitter @Beaversports PHOTOS BY ERIC RIEHL / OAKVILLE BEAVER / @HALTON_PHOTOG GRAND OPENING FUN: Oakville Sports Training Academy, a multi-sport training facility in east Oakville, held its grand opening Saturday.
