Motorcycle noise testing Motorcyclists who want to continue riding in Oakville may want to get their bikes tested to make sure they will not violate a new noise bylaw amendment that comes into effect July 1. The Town of Oakville and Halton Regional Police Service will host the testing, which will take place May 27 and June 24 in the main parking lot of Town Hall between noon and 3 p.m. Town Hall is located at 1225 Trafalgar Rd. During these sessions, motorcycle owners will be given a chance to test their bikes for decibel levels -- free of charge -- before a bylaw prohibiting excessive motorcycle noise is enforced. "It's important to note that most motorcycles will comply with the bylaw," said Phil Bouillon, assistant Town Clerk. "Owners should only be concerned if their motorcycle has been un-muffled or had other after-market exhaust systems installed." Under the bylaw, a motorcycle cannot be operated in Oakville if it emits any sound exceeding 92 decibels from the exhaust when it's idling. Decibel readings will be taken at 50 cm from the exhaust by a sound level meter. Town staff said a train whistle, jackhammer or rock concert generates similar noise levels, typically reaching 90 decibels. Sustained exposure to decibel levels of 90-95 decibels can result in hearing loss. 17 · Wednesday, May 23, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com The amendment, passed by council in December 2011, is a direct result of concerns raised by residents about excessive motorcycle noise. Individuals who violate the bylaw could face a minimum fine of $400. For more information, visit www.oakville.ca. PIANOHOUSE BURLINGTON ANNUAL INVENTORY CLEARANCE SALE.
