www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, May 18, 2012 · 20 Builder News Phelps Homes presented with NHBA Award of Excellence As a master builder since 1975 in Ontario's Golden Horseshoe and Niagara Region, Phelps Homes has a long history of personalized home building and giving back to the community. Phelps Homes was recently presented with the Niagara Home Builders' Association Award of Excellence for "Most Innovative Outdoor Space". This "Innovative Outdoor Space" is a gazebo, fashioned after the layout of Fort George as it appeared in the early 1800s, incorporating historical elements in the overall design. The gazebo was built by Phelps staff and was donated to the Grimsby Peace Garden this spring. On the north bastion of the gazebo rests a cannon ball found by Paul Phelps' grandfather. Legend has it that the American cannon ball was abandoned when the Americans retreated 200 years ago. The cannon ball serves as a reminder that "The Forty" was not always peaceful. Grimsby's Peace Garden, located on the shores of Lake Ontario next to the historic Grimsby Pump House, officially opened this spring. Encompassing about 5,000 square feet, the circular shape of the garden is already attracting daily visitors who enjoy the fabulous view or a walk along one of the many pathways. This site will not only represent peace but will also provide local artists and musicians a place to express their creative talents, visitors to take in the picturesque views, and locals to enjoy lasting memories with friends and family. On Saturday May 26, The Grimsby Historical Society will be hosting a 2012 House Tour as a tribute to the anniversaries of the War of 1812. There are six fascinating homes included in the tour and you are encouraged to take a side trip to visit this fabulous park and view a little touch of history.
