Vol. 50 No. 60 "Using Communication To Build Better Communities" Rock, paper By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Trees were traded for lakefront nikki wesley / oakville beaver / @halton_photog CUT: A Rock, Paper, Scissors competition was held at White Oaks Secondary School (WOSS) by the high school's Free the Children Committee, Power of One Committee, and Free the Children. Free the Children founder Craig Kielburger did the judging of the competition and then spoke to the assembly of students. Each competitor donated $1 to participate. Funds raised will support the construction of an all-girls high school in Kenya. Here, Kielburger judges Ward 5/6 public school board trustee Kelly Amos and Caitlin Lumbers as they face off in competition. Fundraiser will honour Katherine Newman By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF It's a day of fun and activities for the community, but also a day to honour a dear friend taken far too soon. Friends of Katherine Newman will hold a special fundraiser called Strides for Friends on Sunday, June 3 at Mother Teresa Catholic School. The event will include a 5 km run/walk, a 10 km run, a barbecue, street hockey, basketball and more. Katherine, 43, was found stabbed to death in her Treetop Terrace residence on Jan. 12. At about the same time, her husband Kyle Newman, 43, was fatally shot by Halton police after he charged officers with a knife in his hand at the police station located at 95 Oak Walk Dr. Halton police have yet to officially link the two incidents. All funds raised during the June 3 event will go to support Katherine's three children Thomas, Joshua and James as they continue to rebuild their lives. "This is just a way for those of us who were close to Katherine to channel our energy into something good," said Heidi Lundy, Katherine's close friend. Town council shot down the request in August 2010 on the grounds the proposal would be an overdevelopment of the property. The developer appealed to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB), but before the hearing, the builder and Town of Oakville worked out a settlement in which the developer was permitted to build 15 luxury estate homes and the road. The Lambert-Smye heritage house will also be maintained and serve as the 16th condominium unit See Developer page 10
