If designation is not merited, the owners can proceed with demolition after the 60 days. The Oakville Arena, which is owned by the Town, was a source of concern for residents back in December when a Town staff report called for its decommissioning. In this report, Town staff said the arena required an estimated $13.4 million to bring it up to code and modern standards. Council decided to withdraw this report opting instead to hold public consultations to discuss the arena's future. These discussions are ongoing. "As part of staff's investigation of additional potential heritage resources, staff undertook a review of all properties identified by MPAC data which at one time contained a building constructed prior to 1950," said Town Heritage Planner Carolyn Van Sligtenhorst in a report to council. "This date was chosen to capture potentially-significant properties from the 1940s and earlier, while not including the vast amount of buildings which were constructed in the 1950s and later in new subdivisions throughout Oakville. "However, a small number of properties from the 1950s-1970s were also examined for potential heritage value for their unique mid-century modern designs." This is the third update to the register since it was established in 2007. While 49 properties were added to the register, Tuesday, four were taken off. One of these properties was removed because it turned out to be a contemporary structure. One home was demolished without standard heritage approval, while the other two were removed as alterations, modernizations and incompatible additions had caused them to lose their heritage value. Heritage Oakville agreed with all additions and removals to the register. Individual letters will be sent to property owners providing information on why their property was added or removed.
