Gala to honour Parker and fundraise for military families A special gala dinner will be held at the Harbour Banquet and Conference Centre on June 27 to honour the late Canadian Forces Colonel Geoff Parker and the families of all those who serve in the armed forces. Parker, 42, who grew up in Oakville, was killed while serving in Kabul, Afghanistan on May 18, 2010, when a suicide car bomber attacked the International Security Assistance Force convoy he was travelling in. He is the highest-ranking Canadian Forces soldier to lose his life in Afghanistan. The June 27 event, organized by HAVET Fishing, will recognize Parker's sacrifice, but will also serve a dual purpose by raising money for military families resource centres. "Military family resource centres are the organizations that provide programs to assist military members and particularly their families," said Retired Colonel Guy Smith, founder of HAVET Fishing and veteran of Afghanistan. "Although the government is doing a great job, there are always gaps between where we are and where we need to be... What about the wife who has to go out and get retraining or maybe has to go out and get a job? The children... there's challenges with them, so the military families resource centres provides many of these wonderful programs that help with these challenges." Smith said while the military families resource centres act as a charity in its own right, it is not organized for large-scale fundraising. This is where HAVET Fishing comes in. Smith said he is hopeful the June 27 gala will raise $30,000 for the resource centres. 3 · Wednesday, May 30, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com Inside Opinion............................................6 Artscene.........................................22 Sports.............................................24 Classified.......................................29 Full Delivery: Real Estate, City Parent, Sunshades Window, Barbecues Galore, Globo Shoes, AAR Automotive Sales, Ishrani Henry, RE/MAX, Hydropool Hot Tubs, JYSK, Rona, Shopping News, Bouclair, IDEA, Sheridan Nurseries, Home Depot, Sears For home delivery & customer service call (905) 845-9742 Mon., Tues. 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Wed., Thu., and Fri. 9 a.m.-7 p.m. (open for calls only after 5 p.m.) Closed Sat. and Sun.
